Research Software Engineer

STFC - The Science and Technology Facilities Council - STFC Daresbury Laboratory

Fixed Term (18 months)

About Us

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations. We’re trusted to support, enable and undertake pioneering projects in an amazing diversity of fields. Through world-class facilities and people, we’re driving ground-breaking advances in science and technology.

At the Hartree Centre, we utilise the UK’s premier supercomputing environment, researchers and software developers, to provide an outcome based collaborative R&D service to help UK Industry and Academia develop better products, services, processes and software.

About The Role

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Research Software Engineer (RSE) to join our team to contribute the development of a minimal viable product (MVP) for a potential start-up company. The MVP will deliver easy to use interfaces to modelling and simulation methodologies accessible by companies in the formulated product sector. The MVP will facilitate easy access to high performance or cloud computing platforms. Using cutting edge technologies you will use your skills to develop highly functional computational workflows designed to run on multiple computing architectures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the development of robust workflows
  • Developing for cloud and container deployment
  • Developing data structures and databases for managing simulation and analysis output
  • Working closely with the Hartree Centre science and computing teams to develop a MVP to demonstrate to potential customers and investors
  • Meeting with potential partners to develop understanding of requirements
  • Perform use case analysis and capture user requirements.

Occasional UK travel will be required to attend meetings, conferences and presentations (there is also the possibility of international travel).

We are looking for an experienced RSE who not only has the skills to deliver stable workflows for computational simulations, but also someone who has interest in the development of web services. Whilst a science PhD is not essential, we would prefer you to have a good understanding of a STEM subject.

About You

It is essential that you have demonstrable software engineering experience on high performance computing platforms along with proven experience in developing complex workflows or software.

You must be proficient in a number of scripting (python, perl, etc.) and coding languages (e.g. C, C++, Fortan).

Good knowledge of job schedulers (e.g. Platform LSF, slurm) is also essential for this role.

You will have cloud computing experience and experience in writing effective documentation. A STEM degree is also required.

It is desirable that you have experience with Docker and container management e.g. Kubernetes and working knowledge of NoSQL databases (e.g. MongoDB).

Knowledge of web service and web app development would also be beneficial in the role.

Experience in project management is desirable but not essential.

Benefits

An exceptional index linked pension scheme, 30 days leave allowance and flexible working are offered.

Full details of offered benefits can be found on STFC’s careers pages (http://www.stfccareers.co.uk).
