Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties

Full Time, 9 months Fixed Term

As a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow with expertise in Evidence Synthesis/ Systematic Review/ Related fields, you will work on Keeping Secrets Online, an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Centre for Research and Evidence on Security Threats (CREST). The post is for 9 months Fixed Term.

The successful applicant must be available to start by 1st January 2018. Interviews will be held week commencing 30 October 2017.

Keeping Secrets Online synthesises new knowledge that will be useful to those who support people keeping secrets legitimately as part of their job, and will enhance the UK’s capacity to detect and mitigate threats generated via online channels. Online secret keeping offers a rich seam of inquiry, as the lack of non-verbal signals in this environment is used strategically for effective deceit.

You will draw together a wealth of research carried out across diverse disciplines into how people keep secrets online, what helps them to keep those secrets, what acts as barriers, and how these vary based on age, gender and culture. The evidence synthesis that you undertake will consist of three separate evidence reviews which explore strategies that members of the public may use when keeping secrets online: buying and using illegal drugs, escaping from intimate partner violence, and having an illicit affair. The reviews are likely to involve the synthesis of both qualitative and quantitative evidence either in the form of published studies or ‘grey literature’. Your research will be central to the development of an “Illustrated Guide to Keeping Secrets Online” by a graphic artist, and to developing stakeholder workshops that disseminate the knowledge that you generate.

Roles and Responsibilities

You will be expected to:

Work closely with the review team to design and conduct the reviews to publishable standards. This will involve development of the review protocol, identification and selection of studies, data extraction and synthesis, and quality assessment. As the evidence reviews will utilise evidence synthesis methods in a novel context, this post affords an exciting opportunity to develop innovative methods.
