Applications are invited from highly motivated and talented individuals for appointment as a Lecturer Below the Bar, Contract Type B, in the School of Natural Sciences at NUI Galway. Applications from candidates with an internationally competitive research and teaching background in Plant Epigenetics are welcome. Candidates should have strong skills and background in basic and/or applied aspects of plant epigenetics. 

The School includes the five Disciplines of Biochemistry, Botany & Plant Science, Earth & Ocean Sciences, Microbiology and Zoology. The School is highly active in research and education in the broad areas of Biomedical Sciences & Health, and in Biotechnology & Environmental Sciences, including in the area of Plant and Agricultural Biosciences. The Lecturer will be associated with and a member of the Plant and AgriBiosciences Research Centre (PABC). Members of the School are also key contributors to the University’s Research Institutes, particularly the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES) and the Ryan Institute. 

The School of Natural Sciences is the leading provider of taught and structured research MSc programmes in the College of Science. This post will support the growth of the MSc programmes in AgriBiosciences, Biotechnology, Cancer Research and Biomedical Sciences (Full-time and Distance-Learning), which are aligned with the research strengths and strategic priorities of the University in Biosciences. In addition, the post will support the growth of PhD numbers within the Structured PhD programme in Plant & AgriBiosciences, which is run in conjunction with Teagasc. These postgraduate programmes represent strong national and international growth opportunities for the University and potential sources of future PhD students for the College of Science. 

The appointed lecturer will contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes of the School within the area of plant genetics and biotechnology, with a particular focus on epigenetic mechanisms and applications. The appointee should have good interpersonal skills and be prepared to collaborate with colleagues within the Discipline (Botany and Plant Science), School (e.g. Biochemistry, Microbiology), College (e.g. Plant & AgriBiosciences Research Centre), University (e.g. Ryan Institute and NCBES), nationally and internationally.
