About the opportunity
The Australian Centre for Field Robotics (ACFR) at the University of Sydney, in partnership with Rio Tinto, a global mining company, established the Rio Tinto Centre for Mine Automation (RTCMA) in 2007, and is extending this Centre for a further 5 years through to 2023. The aim of the RTCMA is to develop and implement the vision of a fully autonomous, remotely operated mine. 

This is a major research and development initiative with a clear focus on delivering world leadership in mining automation. The new Centre is seeking a candidate for the position of Principal Research Engineer. The Principal Research Engineer will lead a team of approximately 20 researchers and technical staff, with opportunities to grow the Centre. The appointee will develop and implement the R&D strategy and will manage the day-to-day research and technical activities of the team. Leadership and team management skills, together with the capacity to communicate strategy and technical direction, will be essential. The appointee will report to the Director of Research and Innovation at the ACFR. 

About you
The successful candidate will have a PhD in an engineering discipline related to automation, in particular outdoor robotics and/or large-scale automated information processing software systems, and will have a demonstrated research record in either (or both) of these areas. The appointee will be expected to have a sound understanding of both theoretical and applied research, and demonstrable experience managing significant R&D projects with successful delivery to end-users. 

A demonstrated ability to work closely with industry in applying research outcomes will be crucial. The appointee will also be expected to engage in the training of postgraduates and industry staff, and apply practical skills and solve problems while in the field. 

The position is full-time, fixed term for two years, with potential for extension subject to funding and subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees. Membership of a University approved superannuation scheme is a condition of employment for new appointees
