Research Associate in Terahertz Plasmonics

Imperial College London - Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Optical and Semiconductor Devices

Salary range: £36,800 - £44,220 per annum*

Fixed term appointment for up to three years

South Kensington Campus

Applications are invited for a Research Associate position in the area of theoretical terahertz plasmonics, based at Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College London. The research will be conducted as a part of an EPSRC funded project on the physics of plasmonic gain in low-dimensional electronic systems, in collaboration with the University of Leeds. The project will commence on 1st of December 2017.

The aim of the project is to demonstrate plasmonic gain in a solid-state system, by engineering the interactions of plasmons with dc currents in geometrically asymmetric two-dimensional electron systems. This will lead to the design of self-oscillating plasmonic structures, through a joint programme of fundamental experimental (Leeds University) and theoretical (Imperial College) work, and ultimately the realisation of new classes of device, including emitters in the terahertz (THz) frequency range, for which there is a breadth of potential applications.

The successful applicant will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or Physics. A track record in theoretical electromagnetism is essential, ideally demonstrated in at least one of the following fields: plasmonics, metamaterials, electromagnetic device modelling, terahertz electronics. Good written and oral communication skills in English are essential, as well as strong interpersonal skills. Experience in using off-the-shelf numerical electromagnetic solvers (such as COMSOL and CST) and creating own software is desirable. Also desirable is experience in collaborating with experimental research groups.

Prospective candidates may contact Dr Oleksiy Sydoruk (osydoruk@imperial.ac.uk) directly for further details.

*Candidates who have not yet been awarded their PhD will initially be appointed at the Research Assistant (pre-doctoral) level within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum
