Imperial College London - Department of Bioengineering

Salary Range:
Research Assistant: £32,380 – £34,040 per annum

Full-time, fixed-term appointment until September 2018

A vacancy has arisen for a Research Assistant/Associate (Software Engineer) in the IKC for Synthetic Biology, under the supervision of Professor Richard Kitney and Dr David McClymont. The post holder will join the London DNA Foundry to develop synthetic biology workflow software and database systems to enable the continued development of state-of-the-art high throughput robotic automation platforms. The London DNA Foundry is located at SynbiCITE, which is the Synthetic Biology Innovation and Knowledge Centre bridging the gap between academia and industry to facilitate the commercialisation of new technologies in synthetic biology. The Centre is led by Professors Richard Kitney, from the Department of Bioengineering, and Paul Freemont, from the Department of Medicine.

The London DNA Foundry is a set of advanced automation platforms that enable the systematic construction and rapid testing of synthetic biology designs. The post involves continued development of the AMOS software platform (Python, Flask, PostgreSQL) that has been developed to build genetic constructs that are used in synthetic biology. The AMOS platform is developed using Github, PyCharm, Python, Flask, and PostgreSQL, Jinja2, HTML and Javascript technologies so experience with one or more of these would be advantageous. The post also involves the continued development of the SAS database infrastructure where training will be given as appropriate.

You will be expected to have a degree or further degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, biology or synthetic biology) and have an interest in developing tools to enable automation to accelerate the commercialisation of science. Working knowledge of Python, Flask, Github, Pycharm and PostgreSQL, Jinja2, Javascript and HTML is also expected.

You must have a good undergraduate degree/ MSc (or equivalent) for appointment at Research Assistant level and a PhD (or equivalent) for appointment at Research Associate level.
