Research Associate

University of York - Electronic Engineering

Applications are invited for a Research Associate on the EPSRC funded (EP/R003297/1) project “Full duplex for underwater acoustic communications”. We are seeking a Research Associate to undertake a 3-year research into signal processing and communication algorithms for underwater acoustic channels.

You will conduct research and collaborate with other researchers on the project from Newcastle University who are developing models of the self-interference (SI) in full-duplex (FD) underwater acoustic signal transmission and novel FD-based underwater acoustic communication (UAC) systems. The project will address the following three challenges: (i) understanding of the SI in FD UAC systems; (ii) SI cancellation methods; and (iii) realisation of benefits of FD in UAC networks. You will disseminate the results through high quality journal publications and conference presentations.

You will have your first degree and a PhD or equivalent experience in Electronic Engineering or related subject. You will have knowledge of signal processing and wireless networks (verifiable through peer-reviewed publications and presentation in conferences or other appropriate events), and a proven competency in implementation of analogue and digital signal processing algorithms, in hardware and software, and in MATLAB. You will pay attention to detail and commitment to high quality, have collaborative ethos, interest in and enthusiasm for the subject of the project, willingness to work proactively with colleagues in other work areas/institutions, ability to plan and prioritise work in order to meet deadlines, including initiative to plan research programmes, commitment to personal development and updating of knowledge and skills, experience of carrying out both independent and collaborative research, and knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies.

This full-time post is available for 36 months from the 1st January 2018. The appointment will be made at Grade 6 and salary will be in the range £31,604 - £38,832 a year.
