Bournemouth University (BU) is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic researcher to contribute to a recently funded project within the Department of Computing & Informatics, Machine Intelligence Group. This position is part of a project on “High Frequency Appliance Disaggregation Analysis” that will explore the use of utility data (gas, water, electricity) to monitor the use of energy within domestic dwellings in order to manage energy use (particularly heating) in the home.

The project is expected to draw heavily on the body of Machine Learning and Big Data techniques. Therefore, we are seeking talented and enthusiastic candidates with excellent analytical, communication and scientific writing skills. Candidates must have strong analytical background in Machine Learning and Data Mining, particularly online learning from data streams with proven experience in human activity recognition and Bayesian modelling (graphical models specifically). Candidates must also possess very strong Scala programming skills to be able to implement the developed algorithms in Flink, the European big data platform.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD degree and should have an excellent publication record in the areas of interest; you will also be expected to contribute to the generic research and the related publication activities.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute strongly to the project initiating new ideas, disseminating the findings and developing future funding proposals. Excellent written, numeric and oral communication skills are required. You will need to be self-motivated and a team player. 

This post is available for up to 9 months on a fixed-term basis until June 2018.
