Fixed Term appointment until 31 March 2019 in the first instance

Salary at Research Assistant level: £32,380 - £34,040 per annum

Salary at Research Associate level: £36,800 - £44,220 per annum*

We have an exciting opportunity for a Research Associate (Data Scientist/Application Scientist) to work on a joint initiative at Imperial College between the Data Science Institute (DSI) , the Institute for Translational Medicine and Therapeutics (ITMAT Data Science Group  and the Division of Brain Sciences to develop a “Big Data” translational platform for data curation, quality control and standardized analysis of complex clinical, environmental, lifestyle, imaging and ‘omics’ data. Intended initially to rapidly enable more efficient exploitation of the UK Biobank ( dataset hosted at Imperial College, the initial focus will be on diseases of the brain, particularly including late-life dementias

The post is supported by the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)  and the Division of Brain Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine .

The post holder will have multiple opportunities along the course of the project to build expertise on a wide range of phenotypic, imaging and omics data for biomedical and clinical research, as well as to master a multitude of analytical tools, open-source platforms and frameworks including the tranSMART knowledge management platform, cloud computing technologies, machine learning, and large-scale data visualization.

The successful candidate will be expected to exploit and contribute to the refinement of integration and analysis methods for high-throughput data, with a particular emphasis on integrating genomic, imaging and clinical measures and carrying out needed curation effort. The post holder will work closely with clinicians to understand their needs and research questions.

To apply you must have a PhD (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the research subject e.g. computer science, applied mathematics, informatics, or a related subject or significant experience in relevant field. You should have a track record of biomedical research with solid knowledge in handling/processing large and complex datasets; ability to conduct and complete research and development projects, working knowledge of modern analytical programming languages (e.g. R, Matlab, Python toolkits) and programming languages (e.g. Java, Perl, C/C++); basic shell scripting in UNIX. Previous experience with SQL is a plus.
