We wish to recruit a Senior Research Leader with an excellent track record in health services, health systems or public health research and good understanding of health and healthcare challenges and priorities in the UK and Europe. The role will be based at RAND Europe's Cambridge (England) office.

About the Senior Research Leader post

We are looking for an inspirational Senior Research Leader to support the Research Group Director of the Innovation, Health & Science (IHS) research group.   They will be an internationally recognised expert within health and healthcare research and will strategically manage a portfolio of work. They will also be accountable for working with senior colleagues in supporting and motivating the IHS research group on a day-to-day basis, leading groups of talented researchers in winning and delivering research/consultancy tasks across a range of health and healthcare-related topics. The Senior Research Leader will each be responsible for generating an annual fee income of £300k - £500k, leading bid and proposal/business development initiatives to support wider group objectives. This role is based in Cambridge, although there will be some requirement to travel and spend brief periods away visiting clients in the UK and at other European sites.

The role will be involved in developing a programme of research which will be wide-ranging and may include systematic and narrative reviews, intervention design and development, mixed-method evaluations, surveys, qualitative research with staff and patients, and analysis of routine health service data. The role will be actively involved in CCHSR's research.

The Senior Research Leader will be joining a multidisciplinary team of health and health care researchers in the IHS Group within RAND Europe. IHS team members have backgrounds in public health, health services research, health economics, innovation and technology, psychology, systems design and neuroscience. We collaborate widely with like-minded academic and other organisations across Europe, with RAND Health in the U.S. and we have and continue to build strong research partnerships with collaborators internationally.

The successful candidate will have:

  • A health or social science background with a demonstrable and strong track record of applying their research skills to policy problems. Relevant disciplines include health services research, public health, health economics, medical sociology, applied statistics and epidemiology. They will bring knowledge of health and/or healthcare, ideally in more than one setting.
  • A demonstrable track record of winning funding for research/consultancy, ideally through a combination of contract research projects and grant funding.
  • Excellent evidence of working as part of a team, motivating others and developing colleagues for career progression
  • An established network of contacts and partners across the health and healthcare sector with which RAND Europe will be able to develop collaborations and form teams to deliver first class research proposals and projects.

In addition they will have excellent analytical, writing and presentation skills (evidenced by examples) and the proven ability to communicate effectively with clients and to varied audiences. They will have strong project management experience, including experience of budget management.

The role will work in a strong team-based environment to conduct analysis relating to key areas of health services and policy in the UK, European and global settings. Funders of RAND Europe's health and healthcare research include the National Institute for Health Research, Department of Health, NHS England and Public Health England, the European Commission, the Health Foundation, the World Health Organisation and other funders including charities and industry. Job Description

Position Summary

Internationally recognised expert within health and healthcare research providing though leadership and mentoring across all research groups. Supports Research Group Director in the delivery of group and organisation-wide business objectives. Leads teams in undertaking high quality and objective research and analysis.

Key Responsibilities 

Research Leadership

  • Taking forward RAND Europe's successful research track record in its existing health and healthcare areas of specialism, developing and managing a portfolio of large, complex projects and expanding into new profitable avenues of work.
  • Providing thought leadership within specialist topics and on new ways of addressing research challenges (including different methods and techniques).
  • Mentoring research staff and facilitating development of others' project management and methological skills.
  • Taking a leading role in ensuring that RAND Europe's research has a positiive impact within policy communities.

Business Development

  • Contributing to delivery of research group target revenues and sales by securing funding for research and consultancy tasks, and supporting others in doing so.
  • Co-ordinating and managing a portfolio of business development intiatives including leading and supporting bid and proposal activitiy, often multi-partner proposals.
  • Consolidatiing and intiating networks and contacts with funders and collaborators.

Group and Other Responsibilites

  • Working with other team members and the Group Director ot develop the Innovation, Health and Science Group's research and strategy drawing particularly on their specialst area of expertise.
  • As a senior member of the team, setting the collegiate tone and contributing to the development and profile of the wider organisation.
  • Leading on innovative ways to raise RAND Europe;s profiles and communicate research findings to maximise impact.
  • Other duties as required.

Skills and Experience

  • Internationally recognised expert in specialist area (topic and/or methodology)
  • Proven track record developing and managing significatn pojects relates to health and healthcare research in support of improved policymaking in the UK and European Union.
  • Extensive experiece builidng and leading multi-disciplinary teams, with reseach leadership experience preferred.
  • Demonstratable success in business development, including bid and proposal writing (preferably securing govermental and/or research funding).
  • Good knowledge of the NHS and/or comparable healthcare systems.
  • Good research and policy networks in the UK and Europe.
  • Evidence of sustaining effective working relationships with stakeholders in the public and/or private sector and an understanding of their pressures and drivers. Fluency in English is essential. Proficiency in one or more other languages would be an asset.
  • First class verbal and written communication skills with an ability to think and work accurately in high-pressure situations.
  • Intermediate Word, Excel and Powerpoint skills.

Qualifications

  • A credible academic track record to Masters Level (or possibly PhD level) in a related subject area, possibly supported by a MBA. Alternatively, demonstrable equivalent experience in a consulting or central goverment. A background in either public, private or academic sector will be considered.

  • Commercially astute, analytical thinker with the ability to see issues strategically and at a practical level from a variety of perspectives.
  • The gravitas, networking and sales presentation skills to build relationships at senior levels, facilitate joint decision making and develop an order book of business with potential funders and collaborators.
  • An inclusive motivated leader and coach with the inspirational interpersonal sills to motivate a team, instil standards of excellence and develop people as appropiate for career progression.
  • Hands-on, team player with a strong commitment to rigorious research, customer service and ability to project manage multiple tasks and work to tight deadlines. Willing to get his/her hands dirty when the situation demands.
  • Ambitous, results driven, self-starter with high energy levels who is comfortable working with ambiguity as well as process, and quick to spot a commerical oppurtunity.
  • Open-minded, wiht the humility to recognise success in others and accept challenge from highly capable junior members of the team.
