Research Fellow in RF Systems for the ESS

University of Huddersfield - Computing and Engineering

Fixed term appointment for 3 years.

The Accelerator Applications Group of the University of Huddersfield is looking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to take a leading role in the provision, testing and commissioning of radio frequency equipment for the European Spallation Source (ESS) particle accelerator. The ESS is currently under construction in Lund in Sweden and will be one of the largest infrastructures in Europe. It will be used to produce neutrons for materials studies and will have a peak beam power 7 times more than the highest power existing facility. The ESS has more than 22 partner countries, including the UK.

This post is on one the largest UK contributions to the ESS, the RF Distribution System (RFDS). The purpose of this is to transmit power from power sources through chicanes to RF cavities in the ESS tunnel. There will be a total of 146 separate power transmission lines, each transporting up to 1.5 MW. This must be done in a way that is safe to personnel and equipment, but allows monitoring and testing. The total length of transmission line is around 4 km. Most of the system is now being procured from industry.

You will take on the leading role on the RF aspects of the RFDS. This will include overseeing the manufacture of the passive RF components by industry, interfacing with the ESS to ensure they meet the requirements, participating in the testing of some prototypes, witnessing RF factory testing and participating in site acceptance testing of the first deliveries in Lund.  You will also participate in the commissioning of the UK components after installation and may take on other RF roles if time allows.

The role will be overseen by the Principal Investigator, Professor Rob Edgecock, and will be done in close collaboration with the RFDS team at the STFC Daresbury Laboratory and ESS staff. It will involve frequent travel to Lund, Sweden, and manufacturers in Europe and the US.
