Lecturer in Computer Science (Data Science)

Salary Details: Grade 6 £33,518 to £39,992 per annum 

Allowances: £2,923 London Allowance 

As part of its strategic development, the Department of Informatics is seeking applications from candidates for the position of Lecturer in Computer Science (Data Science), starting in January 2018, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful applicant for this post will undertake research and teaching in an area of data science. He or she will be assigned to teach on the Department’s undergraduate programme in computer science and/or on the MSc programmes in Data Science. The successful applicant may also be required to teach on other post-graduate or undergraduate degree programmes offered by the Department of Informatics, and will be expected to supervise both undergraduate and postgraduate projects.

Accordingly, the successful applicant will need knowledge and awareness of current research and practical challenges in Data Science. The Department seeks to broaden and deepen its current strengths in these areas, so candidates engaged in research and teaching which complements that of the existing members of the Department will be considered favourably. In this context, data science has to be understood in its broadest sense, including data management, big data processing, data analytics, data mining, machine learning, natural language processing, smart data, data visualisation, and open data.

The Department is undertaking a review of its research groups, and the successful candidate will be appointed to one of its groups. Research collaboration across research groups and with other Departments in the Faculty and across the College is strongly encouraged. A particular opportunity that the Department is keen to exploit is the link with CUSP London, which would enable a data scientist to engage with data and multi-disciplinary experts drawn from a wide range of partners.

Applicants must have a PhD, an excellent publication record, and the ability to attract research funding. The selection process will include a presentation and a panel interview. 

Presentations are scheduled to be held on Wednesday 25 October 2017 and interviews on Thursday 26 October 2017.
