Research Associate on the Surrey Communication and Language in Education Study (SCALES)

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral Research Associate in the Literacy, Language and Communication Lab (LiLaC) in the Research Department of Language and Cognition at UCL ( This post is funded by an ESRC grant awarded to Professor Courtenay Norbury entitled Predictive Relationships between Language and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (ES/R003041/1). This will involve a follow-up of the SCALES cohort when the children are in Years 6 and 8 of mainstream education. The post offers the opportunity for an outstanding, high-potential, early-career researcher to make a substantial contribution to research into the impact of early variation in language competence on mental health vulnerability during adolescence. The position will be based within Psychology and Language Sciences at UCL with Professor Courtenay Norbury, but will involve collaboration with researchers at King’s College, London and the University of Surrey, as well as schools across Surrey. The post-holder will be responsible for the day-to-day running of this longitudinal research project using standardized assessment and experimental paradigms. This role will entail liaison with school staff and families, testing child participants, data analysis and preparation of results for publication, and dissemination of results to both academic and lay audiences.

The post is available from 8 January 2018 until 7 January 2021.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in a relevant subject area (e.g.language development and disorder, clinical linguistics, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology), a variety of data analysis skills, excellent organizational skills, experience of managing large-scale projects, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team. Extensive traveling throughout Surrey for assessment during the school day is a requirement of this post.
