Teaching Assistant in Economics (Maternity Cover)

The Teaching Assistant will carry out teaching and assessment of the course ECON2601 (Economics 2- Combined Studies), taken by second-year undergraduates pursuing BSc joint honours degrees within the Departments of Mathematics and Statistical Science. The successful candidate will be expected to teach nine one-hour support classes (comprising approximately twenty students each) every other week during the second half of Term 1 and the entire Term 2 – a total of 72 hours of classes; to mark six coursework assignments for each student; to offer regular office hours and to keep records of attendance and coursework marks. The role will entail a total of 300 hours of preparation, marking and teaching work over the entire contract.

The post is available from 1 November 2017 and is to undertake specific maternity cover the duration of which is dependent upon completion of the cover, return of the post holder or cessation of the funding, whichever is soonest. In the first instance, the cover is estimated to be for 5 months.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate small-group teaching ability of undergraduate courses in Economics from a mathematical perspective to students with strong quantitative backgrounds.

Excellent organisational and communication skills are essential. Applicants should hold a relevant undergraduate qualification in Economics (or a related subject) and ideally will be currently studying (or have studied) for a PhD in the same area.
