Postdoctoral Research Associate in Physics

Durham University - Department of Physics

Opening Date: 27 September 2017

Closing Date: 27 October 2017 (Midday)

This post is full time and fixed term for 7 months or until 31 May 2018.

The Atomic and Molecular Physics Research group offers a position for a postdoctoral researcher for the duration of 7 Months (starting 1/11/2017) This position is to work as a postdoctoral researcher in an internationally recognized theoretical atomic and optical physics research group led by Simon Gardiner, working in the area of theoretical and computational study of interacting dipolar atoms, for example in lattice configurations, and related areas. The Durham experimental efforts of Charles Adams and Ifan Hughes are of particularly strong immediate relevance, and working within the Joint Quantum Centre (JQC) Durham–Newcastle provides a wide-ranging and mutually supportive research environment.

The successful applicant will be expected to plan and carry out high-quality independent (both individual and collaborative) theoretical research, which may be both analytical and computational in form, and to write up such research for publication in high-quality scientific journals. In addition the applicant will be expected to interact effectively with postgraduate students and more junior postdoctoral research staff on related projects, including experimental projects, thereby contributing to their development, and to contribute to the smooth running of the group; this may include planning and acquisition of research resources (e.g., computer hardware and software), and liaising with related JQC experimental and theoretical efforts, where appropriate. The applicant will be expected to contribute to regular group meetings through presentations of, e.g., technical aspects of their research as well as general presentations, and to present their research at timely conferences and workshops.
