Salary Range: £36,800 – £44,220 per annum* (Maximum salary on appointment will be £39,800 per annum)

Fixed Term appointment for up to 42 months

The NDE Group wishes to appoint a Research Associate to conduct research into the manipulation and construction of Electro-magnetic acoustic transducers for embedding into robotic systems. The research will be carried out at Imperial College London and involve collaboration with several Academic and Industrial Institutions.

The NDE Group is a multidisciplinary research group based in the Mechanical Engineering Department.  It is one of the largest Academic NDE Groups in the UK and carries out world-leading research in both fundamental and applied aspects of NDE. It is also the headquarters of the UK Research Centre in NDE (RCNDE).

The post holder will be involved in a project that aims to build a novel ultrasonic sensor platform and aid research into how to best deploy it and integrate it into a robotic system for inspection in extreme environments. The project will require both simulation and experimental work and will involve the study of ultrasonic sensor and acquisition system construction, manufacturing and performance testing. The project will require extensive liaison with suppliers and industrial partners.

Applicants should have a Masters degree or PhD (or equivalent) in an area pertinent to the research subject i.e. Non-destructive evaluation (NDE), Robotics, Ultrasonics and associated electronic equipment and signal processing. In addition, some background in Analogue and Digital circuit design, Ultrasonic wave propagation is essential and experience in design of EMAT transducers, in modelling magnetic fields, electrical induction phenomena, robotic manipulation and knowledge of signal processing techniques is desirable.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 - £34,040 per annum.
