The School of Architecture, Landscape and Planning (SAPL) is seeking to appoint a Professor of Urban Data Analysis to be based in its Global Urban Research Unit (GURU). Critically engaging the world of big and open data and new, innovative and experimental strategies, techniques and technologies in a digital context, this exciting new post will lead and develop urban data analysis in GURU as part of a new £2m ‘Spatial Analysis and Modelling at Newcastle’ (SAM@NEWCASTLE) initiative. Central to the role will be the critical mapping, modelling and visualising of urban data in order to conceptualise, theorise and explain the spatial differentiation and inequalities of cultural, economic, environmental, political and social phenomena at a range of geographical scales. Candidates with expertise in the analysis of crime, housing, education, employment, health, political and/or resources flow data will be particularly welcome.  

The Global Urban Research Unit (GURU) undertakes high quality research and consultancy for a range of funding bodies. Its work is primarily focused on developing a better understanding of place and its potential transformation. Our work is theoretically informed but applied, inter-disciplinary, and internationally focused. GURU's work is currently organised around five overlapping themes:    

1. People, Place and Politics
2. Infrastructure and Digital Technologies
3. Identities, Culture and Heritage
4. Environmental Planning, Assessment and Management
5. Urban Design and Human Flourishing    

The Professor of Urban Data Analysis will be an individual of international reputation and standing with an excellent track record of internationally recognised publication, high quality research income generation and engagement with and impact upon policy. Supported by a dedicated Post-Doctoral Research Associate (PDRA) for 3-years, the post offers a unique opportunity to undertake leading edge urban research and to contribute to the development of an internationally renowned research centre - GURU - and to shape the new £2m ‘Spatial Analysis and Modelling at Newcastle’ (SAM@NEWCASTLE) initiative.

SAM@NEWCASTLE comprises linked appointments of 4 Chairs and 4 PDRAs in GURU (part of Architecture, Planning and Landscape); Civil Engineering and Geosciences; CURDS (part of Geography, Politics and Sociology); and, Mathematics and Statistics.  

The post is available from a mutually agreed date. Salary will be at an appropriate point on the Professorial salary scale.
