Brunel University London is looking to recruit a full-time Senior Technician to be responsible for the Analytical Chemistry facilities in our Environment and Health Theme within the University's Institute of Environment, Health and Societies.

Research conducted within the Theme includes investigating the occurrence of chemical contaminants in the environment and their impacts on environmental and human health. Therefore this exciting post will involve supporting our world class research in environmental toxicology and analysis of micro-pollutants in environmental and experimental samples.

The job holder will be involved in research and contract projects requiring the analysis of samples from a variety of sources (e.g. wastewaters, tissues, sediments). They will be expected to deliver this analysis and/or support PhD students/Postdoctoral researchers to do so.

They will be responsible for the safe and efficient running of the laboratories and will be expected to adopt a hands-on approach to ensure equipment and facilities are maintained to a high standard. Experience in instrument troubleshooting is essential, and instrument repair and maintenance would be an advantage.

They will also be required to supervise junior members of staff, and to provide training to staff and research students in the use of analytical equipment and in analytical techniques.

Applicants should have demonstrable experience in the use of one or preferably more of the following techniques:

  • Chromatography, e.g. HPLC
  • GC/MS and LC/MS/MS
  • Atomic spectroscopy

The post holder will also be required to support other laboratory activities, for example in the ecotoxicology laboratories and correspondingly, require strong organisational skills to manage a varied and extensive workload.

You will be a member of a small team, where excellent oral and written communication is an essential skill.
