Together our staff and students are discovering innovative ways to change the world for the better and there has never been a more exciting time for you to join us. We are ranked in the top 1% of universities worldwide and have an international reputation for excellence in teaching and research. We are led by discovery and innovation, with the synergy between research and learning at the core of our activity.

The X-ray and Observational Astrophysics Group at the University of Leicester invites applications for a post-doctoral Research Associate position in Time-Domain Observational Astrophysics. The University of Leicester Astrophysics group has long-standing leadership in the field of high energy astrophysical transients, exploiting a wide range of data from ground- and space-based facilities, including involvement in the Swift satellite mission, and multiple gamma-ray burst follow-up campaigns.

The project builds on this legacy with the particular goal of conducting searches for electromagnetic counterparts of sources detected as gravitational wave signals. We lead the VINROUGE project to use the VISTA telescope at ESO to search for near-infrared “kilonova” signatures of compact binary mergers, and have active involvement in several other multi-messenger campaigns.

We are looking for applicants with expertise in the science underlying these sources, and observational studies of astrophysical transients, but all applicants with a strong background in relevant fields of astrophysics are encouraged to apply.
