Salary: £31,331 to £36,298 per annum (pro-rata if part time) Grade 8 together with USS benefits.

Main Purpose of the Post

We are seeking to appoint a talented HCI researcher to contribute to the creation of the next generation of mobile touch screens that will radically transform user experience for billions of people, globally. The appointee will work alongside colleagues in Swansea led by Matt Jones (Computer Science) and Rory Wilson (Biosciences); a team in Sussex University, led by Sri Subramanian; the BBC R&D UX team, based in Salford, Manchester, led by Phil Stenton; and, leading design space and tangible interface groups in Grenoble and Bristol Universities. This is an exciting opportunity to carry out word-class research with huge potential impact.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

 The job will entail the following activities:

 Creating technology probes to specify a series of driver scenarios for the new surfaces.

  1. Using these probes in workshops and experiments to assess the relative value of different scenarios.
  2. Developing hardware and software prototypes to help us map out the design space for multimodal, malleable interactive mobile surfaces.
  3. Designing and running user-centred experiments to assess the value and performance of different design space dimensions.
  4. Working with the high-fidelity prototype developers (in Sussex) to create working prototypes using highly novel materials.
  5. Helping to design and run experiments and deployments using the high-fidelity prototypes.
