The University of Sussex is looking to recruit a Senior Communications Manager to play a key role in devising and delivering communication strategies to a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. The role sits within the University’s Communications and External Affairs division and will report to the Head of Communications.

The Senior Communications Manager will be responsible for line managing three Media Relations Managers, whose role it is to enhance the reputation of academic school/s by proactively promoting teaching and learning excellence, student experience, research and impact, and academic comment and opinion.

A major part of the role will be seeking proactive opportunities to profile the key pillars of the University’s aims and vision as outlined in the current and emerging organisational strategy. As well as placing an emphasis on institutional stories and research, the post holder will be required to seek creative ways to tell the student story at Sussex and support our plans that put students at the heart of everything we do.

The post holder will seek ways to increase the share of voice from leaders within the University, to ensure that we can enhance our influence within the Higher Education Sector and amongst key audience groups such as the Government, the local community, funding bodies, industry, potential and existing students and their families, and other influencers.

A key element of the role will be supporting the Head of Communications on issues management and ensuring the University can respond swiftly to the range of circumstances that can arise within the University community. In addition they will be very familiar with using social media and a variety of other channels to manage situations that require a sensitive approach.

The role offers an opportunity to a communications professional with an opportunistic approach to writing opinion pieces and by-lined articles for a range of different influencers and will take a proactive and swift approach to doing so.

The post holder will need to have a flexible approach to working outside of office hours and be responsive to media requests in the evening and weekends as a key member of staff in a busy press office.

The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic, self-motivated Communications practitioner who is confident with working with senior leaders and supporting team colleagues. It is essential they have sound judgement in media handling and a strong eye for a story.
