Stipendiary Lecturership (four hours) in Human Geography

Hertford College proposes to appoint a Stipendiary Lecturer in Human Geography from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2018. The post is strictly fixed-term, to cover the research leave of the current Fellow and Tutor in Human Geography, Dr Jamie Lorimer.

The tutorial teaching load of the successful candidate will, collectively, be an average of four hours per week (in pairs and small classes) over the term. The successful candidate will be asked to provide tutorial teaching in the following courses: for Prelims (1st year): Human Geography, Geographical Techniques, and Geographical Controversies; for Final Honours School (2nd year): Space, Place and Society, Environmental Geography and Geographical Research. Some dissertation supervision may also be required, depending on the topics chosen by the students. The appointee will work alongside Dr Janet Banfield in helping to organise teaching in Geography at Hertford, assist with the pastoral care of undergraduates as well as with the selection of candidates to study Geography at the college, and promote Geography as a discipline.

Candidates should have a good first degree in Human Geography (or a related subject) and, preferably, should have, or be close to completing, a doctorate in the subject. Candidates will need to demonstrate research excellence and teaching experience. Experience with Oxford Undergraduate Admissions would also be an advantage. The salary for a four-hour post is on a scale from £8,832 to £9,933 p.a., depending on qualifications and experience, and will be pensionable with USS. The successful candidate will also be entitled to associate membership of the SCR, to use of a shared teaching room in college, to free lunches in college (when teaching and during vacations) and to one free dinner per week during weeks 0–9 of term.
