Physics Teaching Laboratory Technician

University of Southampton - Support Staff

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Physics and Astronomy Department supporting our students as part of an outstanding technical team within our undergraduate teaching laboratories.

Our students spend a large amount of their contact time being taught in our laboratories, especially in the first year.  We want to give our students the best experience possible and our technicians make a key contribution to our (and their) success.  Our student satisfaction according to the National Student Survey 2017 was 99%, we’re looking for candidates to help us try and better it!

You will be technically competent in a relevant field and a confident communicator, but as a department we have a track record of supporting and developing our staff in all stages of their career in our inclusive team.   The technical aspect of this job crosses many scientific and engineering disciplines, so we are looking for someone who is flexible and ready to be challenged. Take a look at the job description and person specification on our website to see what we are looking for and how you can fit in.

You won’t be alone either!  The teaching lab technicians are embedded in a group within a larger technical team including: Research laboratory, Electronic and Mechanical workshops, Cleanroom and Stores technicians who work together to support the whole department.  In addition to our student scores, 100% of our research is world leading (according to the Research Excellence Framework) and our technical team is proud to be an important contributor to that success.

The University Strategy map includes, at its core, Collegiality, Quality and National & International reputation.  We embrace this wholeheartedly and will expect you to work with our Academic, Technical and Administration staff to provide a high quality education for our students which is world renowned.

We offer a range of benefits including a contributory pension scheme and a generous holiday allowance.  All staff have access to a wide range of local and national retail, leisure and service discounts. These include restaurants, travel, local shops, entertainment and health & fitness facilities.

Take a look at our website http://www.phys.soton.ac.uk/ to find out more about our department and our equality and diversity awards.
