Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Cavity Quantum Photonics

University of Oxford - Department of Physics

Clarendon Laboratory, Parks Road, Oxford

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in cavity quantum photonics.

The post is available initially for a fixed-term duration of 12 months, with a possible extension by 4 months.

This project is a targeted research effort supported by the EPSRC Hub for Networked Quantum Information Technologies (NQIT). We are seeking for researchers to assist with the development of a quantum-photonic network which connects single atoms deterministically coupled to high-finesse optical cavities to enable remote coupling, measurement-induced entanglement and hybrid atom-photon quantum processing.

The successful candidate will explore and compare atom-trap compliant cavity-mirror designs and mirror production methods, including super-polishing of substrates, laser machining of fibre tips and focussed ion-beam (FIB) milling. The aim is to eventually produce mirrors which allow for strong mode coupling and for plano-concave cavities of large mirror distance, potentially compliant with both ion and atom traps.

Applicants should possess, (or be very close to obtaining) a doctorate in physics or a related field and ideally have a strong experimental background in high-finesse cavity-QED, atom optics, integrated photonics, quantum optics and quantum correlation measurements.

Previous experience in the fields of atom/ion trapping, microfabrication, and complex data analysis and process control will be an advantage.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of optical cavity QED techniques, photonic quantum networks, non-classical correlation and entanglement phenomena and their experimental implementations, and to possess a strong research track record in quantum atom optics or related fields.

The post-holder will have the opportunity to teach.

Please direct enquiries about the role to Axel Kuhn (

You will be required to upload a brief statement of research interests, CV and details of two referees as part of your online application.

Only applications received before 12.00 midday on 23 November 2017 can be considered.
