Post-Doctoral Research Associate (Knowledge for Use)

Durham University - Department of Philosophy

Closing Date: 19 October 2017 (Midday)

This Post is Part Time & Fixed Term (6 Months).

Durham University is seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Research Associate on a part-time basis, starting on 01 November 2017, working with Professor Nancy Cartwright (Head of Project) and Professor Anna Marmodoro on a European Research Council-funded project, Knowledge for Use: Making the Most of Social Science to Build Better Policies (K4U). The project aims to construct a radically new picture of how to use social science to build better social policies.

The research for this post will be housed under K4U theme 1, especially with respect to concepts of causation and explanation and questions about what kinds of knowledge are useful for drawing causal conclusions. The research will look, inter alia, at the metaphysics of causation and change, accounted for in terms of causal powers; at the metaphysics of structures; at identity and individuation criteria of objects, in physical and social domains. The post offers the opportunity to work with an exciting team of philosophers and social scientists from Durham, the London School of Economics and Ca' Foscari University, Venice.
