Head of Business Solutions Delivery

The British Museum - Information Services

The British Museum’s Information Services department is seeking a technical services manager, called Head of Business Solutions Delivery, to lead a delivery team primarily responsible for Service Transition but also collaborating on Service Design and Service Strategy. The team is comprised of developers, application and infrastructure engineers, a database administrator and project managers.

This is an exciting time to join Information Services and the Museum. The Museum’s first digital strategy is in the early stages of implementation resulting in new technologies being introduced and encouraging new ways of working and interacting with our visitors (both virtual and physical). Additionally, ageing legacy systems are being replaced requiring new thinking, and unique opportunities to realise efficiencies, fill gaps in our knowledge and processes, and facilitate creative decisions.

Staff feedback indicates that the Museum is an interesting place to work not only because of what the Museum holds, but because of the variety of systems and technologies. The current service catalogue comprises 60 services and includes cataloguing systems helping to manage our collection, commercial systems (such as ecommerce, ticketing, tills), in-gallery presentations, management systems plus a plethora of services supporting specific research and scientific projects. Most applications are hosted on premises and sit on Windows platforms but the team will increasingly need to deliver services that utilise different technologies and may be cloud-based. Implementation and changes to services within the Museum are undertaken both internally and through third-party relationships.

Interactions will involve staff from across the Museum including staff supporting the business functions, visitor services, as well as those with a curatorial and/or research focus relating to items in the Museum’s collection.

Key areas of responsibility:

  • Lead & develop the delivery team to ensure robust service transition takes place according to ITIL principles.
  • Support the team strategically helping to prioritise work.
  • Provide formal line management to ensure talent is nurtured, knowledge is built and shared.

Person Specification:

The ideal candidate will be educated to degree level (or equivalent), with a good understanding of development techniques, the application lifecycle and infrastructure.  Commercial experience negotiating contracts and managing suppliers is essential as is previous experience in delivery of larger group-wide initiatives whilst at the same time attending to detail of smaller, interdependent projects. The successful applicant will also be able to demonstrate their knowledge and experience of working with Agile and/or other major project development management methodologies.
