Research Facilities Coordinator

The Research Operations Office at The University of Cambridge is looking to recruit a pro-active, enthusiastic candidate to the role of Research Facilities Coordinator to manage the day-to-day operation of the University's equipment sharing database and associated systems. As a globally-leading research-led institution, the University holds a vast array of cutting-edge, state-of-the-art scientific equipment across a multitude of departments from Plant Sciences to Physics. The purpose of the database is to catalogue such equipment and its usage, providing an accurate and up-to-date repository of the University's equipment assets, enabling users both internal and external to the University to book access to them. In compliance with Research Councils UK requirements, equipment information is also uploaded to the UK's national portal, to which the University of Cambridge is the largest contributor.

This multi-faceted role will require the post holder to be the primary contact for equipment sharing matters within the University, and responsible for collating and ensuring the integrity of the data contained within the database. This will involve coordinating activity with academic and other support departments, including meeting with equipment holders where necessary. The University hosts a number of major facilities, such as its portion of the new Royce Institute, and the post holder will be responsible for creating and maintaining close links with them. The successful candidate will also coordinate and facilitate database interaction by maintaining its online presence through the national portal and other associated resources (Twitter, publicly accessible webpages, and the searchable website).

The University is also looking at the different ways in which access to equipment is administered across the various departments, and in collaboration with colleagues external to the Research Operations Office, the post holder will be tasked in investigating the different systems in operation and putting forward proposals for where improvements can be made.

In addition to the aforementioned other duties include: monitoring developments in the sector and making appropriate recommendations, creating relationships with key funders, exploring potential efficiency drivers, demonstrating the system to new users and setting up accounts, and providing accurate business information to senior colleagues on the equipment sharing agenda.

Ideally with a background in research and database management, the successful candidate will be a pro-active self-starter with a keen eye for detail and the ability to analyse and interpret large amounts of data accurately, and often to tight deadlines.
