Head of Research Development

Cardiff University

You will be employed as Head of Research Development in the Research and Innovation Services (RIS) Department.  Reporting directly to the Director of RIS as a member of the Department’s Senior Management Team you will provide leadership and overall management of the Research Development function, including operational aspects of the research support services that enable colleges and academic schools to secure external funding and increase research income.

Each year Cardiff University’s researchers secure over £100 million in new externally-funded research grants and contracts. The Research Development team provides critical, underpinning operational support to ensure that researchers are appropriately supported in developing bids for funding and that income to the University is maximised through such activity.

You will ensure that staff in the Research Development team acquire and exploit a thorough knowledge and understanding of the major research sponsors and their funding programmes. The Head of Research Development is a senior leadership position within the management team of the Research and Innovation Services Department. The post-holder leads a team with responsibilities both for focused, tailored support for colleges and their academic schools and for cross-cutting activities including research data and information management functions and European and International Research Office (EIRO) expertise in Horizon 2020, EU Structural Funds, the Global Challenges Research and Newton Funds and related matters.

This role requires a dynamic, proactive individual who can identify, evaluate and drive forward system and process improvements which result in enhanced support for academic researchers, their schools and colleges.
