Project Officer, Medieval Manuscripts Digitisation

British Library

Fixed Term Contract for 9 months (starting January 2018)

The British Library is recruiting for a Project Officer to work on ‘The Polonsky Foundation England and France Project: Manuscripts from the British Library and the Bibliothèque nationale de France, 700-1200’. The role is to assist curators in the Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts Section with all aspects of preparation for and delivery of the digitisation project and other smaller digitisation projects, including the Southeast Asian manuscripts project. The tasks will include arranging for delivery to the Studio, checking images and uploading manuscripts to the Library’s online catalogue, contributing to the development of learning materials, preparing blog posts, answering enquiries and a range of other curatorial duties.

The successful candidate will have a post-graduate degree, or its equivalent, in medieval art, history or literature, or another directly relevant field, together with specialist knowledge and research experience of Latin medieval manuscripts and their decoration. The role requires good knowledge of Latin and specialist knowledge of medieval palaeography and codicology.

Because this is an externally funded position, excellent attention to detail, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work to strict deadlines are essential qualities. The applicant should also demonstrate the ability to write concise, unambiguous, and accurate text in English for both general and academic audiences and to work independently and as part of a team. The post holder is expected to be able to liaise effectively with colleagues. The selection process may include questions about the date and origin of a particular manuscript to be shown at the interview.

This is a nine month post beginning in January 2018, dependant on the necessary security clearances being obtained.
