London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership Studentship Competition

The London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership studentship competition for October 2018 entry is now open.  LISS DTP invites applications for four year (1+3) studentships for candidates for a Masters’ degree leading directly to a PhD, and for three year (+3) doctoral studentships (PhD only) at one of the LISS DTP partner institutions: King’s College London, Queen Mary University of London or Imperial College London.

We welcome applications from candidates whose research is situated within any of LISS DTP’s 13 Thematic Pathways.  These cover a range of social science disciplines, including business and management, economics, education, epidemiology, geography, international relations, law, linguistics, politics, psychology, sociology, war and security studies. The DTP particularly welcomes project proposals utilising Advanced Quantitative Methods and interdisciplinary approaches and has dedicated awards in these areas to offer.

Eligibility

Successful applicants are likely to have a very good first degree (BA or BSc Honours or equivalent), at first class standard (or upper second class with clear evidence of first class work).  Applicants for a +3 award will normally also have an appropriate Masters’ degree (at distinction or at least high merit level) and/or another appropriate qualification, such as prior, relevant work expertise.

Studentships are only available for students who meet residency requirements set out by the ESRC. If you are already in study and/or have been classed as ‘international’ for fees purposes, then you will not be eligible for a LISS DTP studentship. EU students may apply for a studentship on a fees-only basis. Stipend funding may also be possible through institutional funding for successful EU applicants on a limited basis.

If you are currently in your first year of doctoral study (first or second year of study if you are a part-time student), then you are eligible to apply for a studentship to cover the remainder of your study time from October 2018.

The Award

The studentship will cover the full cost of Home/EU fees for a Masters’ and/or PhD programme, and an annual stipend (valued at £16,553 in September 2017).  As part of your award, you will be able to access LISS DTP’s Research Training Support Grant funding to help cover some of the costs of training, fieldwork, travel and more.

How to apply

Candidates should complete the relevant Case for Support form for their chosen mode of studentship (1+3 or +3). Access to the forms and further guidance on their completion can be found on the LISS DTP website in the studentships section. Candidates must also complete a full admissions application for their chosen Masters’ or PhD programme at one of the LISS DTP Partner institutions. Links to each LISS DTP Partner’s central admissions portals can be found the LISS DTP website.

The deadline for applications for ESRC/LISS DTP funding is 31 January 2018, 17:00 GMT. This deadline is absolute; late applications will not be considered under any circumstances.
