Research Fellow in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics

University of Surrey - Department of Physics

The University of Surrey is looking to employ a full time Research Fellow in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics for a fixed term two year position to participate in the major EU FET project High Frequency Topological Insulator devices for Metrology (HiTIMe) with a potential for extension (project ending is 31 January 2022).

The vision of HiTIMe is to explore the high-frequency properties of devices incorporating topological insulator (TI) materials with focus on charge and light-matter sensing for future metrology. We will combine materials development with theoretical modelling, device fabrication, electrical transport measurements, resonant microwave spectroscopy and several types of high frequency scanning probe techniques. The outcomes will also be directly relevant to other nano-electronic devices utilizing TI materials, such as hybrid devices for quantum information processing, sensing and spintronic applications.

The post holder will be based at the University of Surrey and conduct theoretical research in this area of condensed matter and will be expected to work towards the success of the project according to plans and needs of the collaboration. Other responsibilities will include assisting the head of the group with supervision of students and administrative tasks. We also provide opportunities for tutoring in physics department courses.

The successful candidate should hold a PhD (or be near to completion) in the relevant field and have a strong research track record, including academic publications. He/she must hold good mathematical and computational skills and have the ability to analyse and solve complex problems as they arise.

Informal enquires can be made to Dr Eran Ginossar (

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£30,688) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate. Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£31,604).
