University of Bristol - Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to join the Smart Internet Lab (www.bristol.ac.uk/smart) and to contribute to the TOUCAN EPSRC-funded research project, which aims to achieve ultimate network convergence enabled by a radically new technology agnostic architecture targeting a wide range of applications and end users.

You will undertake applied research in Software Defined Networking for 5G next-generation wireless technologies, such as mmWave and massive MIMO. Your research is expected to focus on the following research topics:

  • Application of Software Defined Networks (SDN) for the control plane and user plane of 5G networks: network control protocols and algorithms, system design, implementation and experimentation;
  • Network Function Virtualization (NFV) adoption for 5G packet core as well as 5G radio control functions;
  • 5G end-to-end multi-technology network ecosystem convergence and development including wireless, wired and data center.

The role-holder will join the Smart Internet Lab (www.bristol.ac.uk/smart), a world class hub for internet research interfacing with the Communications Systems and Networks Research Group (CSN) within the Faculty of Engineering. The research centre has a long-standing track record on wireless communications, 5G, the IoT, Connected Autonomous Vehicles among other areas. This will provide access to state-of-the-art testing and measurement equipment, world-leading laboratory facilities and unique software capabilities. The role-holder will be expected to support Smart Internet Lab activities by writing research papers, presenting work at international conferences and contributing to the supervision of project students.
