Lecturer in Theoretical Philosophy

As a Lecturer, you will carry out research and teaching in at least one of the areas of Theoretical Philosophy (including philosophy of language, formal logic, philosophy of logic, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind and action, philosophy of science). Other things being equal, preference will be given to candidates whose areas of specialisation or competence include philosophy of gender, race, disability, or other dimension of diversity. We hope to appoint someone who can both contribute to the traditional theoretical curriculum and also help the School move forward with the development of its teaching and/or research profile in one or more of these areas. Amongst the specialisms included within Theoretical Philosophy, we may additionally give preference to candidates able to contribute to the teaching of intermediate/advanced logic and/or philosophy of language.

You will be able to teach at all levels of our varied undergraduate programmes, and to provide dissertation supervision. You will also contribute to relevant MA programmes and supervise research students. The role additionally involves making a contribution to the effective management of the School, Faculty and wider University. 

You will have a PhD in Philosophy or cognate discipline and relevant teaching experience. You will have an excellent research record and a potential for establishing an international reputation.

  1. A cover letter which includes the following summary information: Area(s) of Specialisation, Area(s) of Competence, start date of graduate work, PhD completion date (or expected completion date), number of publications in peer-reviewed journals or edited collections;
    2. A standard cv;
    3. A research writing sample (maximum 10,000 words);
    4. A publication list, with peer-reviewed publications starred, followed by a descriptions of future plans (max 1,000) words) eg. future article or book plans, elaboration of research themes or projects, possible grant applications, future speaking invitations, conference or workshops plans;
    5. A teaching statement (max 1,000) words) eg. modules you might like to teach at Leeds, experience of teaching, statement of approach to teaching, experience of teaching in different formats or evidence from course evaluation questionnaires.
