Job description:
The position (in Swedish: “biträdande lektor”) is the equivalent of Assistant Professor (tenure track). The official time before coming up for tenure and promotion is four years, but can be extended to five years. 

Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) is a large-scale data collection and research program, see and the V-Dem Institute is Directed by Professor Staffan I. Lindberg. The successful candidate is expected to primarily conduct research with a focus on the main questions of the research program ”Failing and Successful Sequences of Democratization”, funded by an European Research Council Consolidator Grant. Teaching is expected up to equivalent of a 1/1 load, as well as contributions to the daily activities of the V-Dem Institute (as needed with administrative tasks, coding and quality control, data management etc). Research is guaranteed at a minimum of 50 percent of full time employment (FTE) and in practice it will probably be around 75 percent. 

The position is open to candidates who have a PhD in political science or related field, within seven years of graduation. Applications will be evaluated primarily on research excellence in areas of relevance to the FASDEM project. The successful candidate will demonstrate ability at high international level in the field of comparative democratization and/or autocratization and breakdown,  authoritarian regimes, and/or political development. 

It is also meritorious with:

  • A well developed proposal for a research project that falls within the area of FASDEM, of high scientific quality.
  • Significant, explicit interest in further extending on and use the sequencing methods developed in the V-Dem research program
  • Advanced time-series, cross-sectional regression techniques, Vector Auto-Regression (VAR), sequencing algorithms, optimal matching methods, Monte Carlo chains, and/or Dynamic treatment regimes 

Documented experience with teaching at under-/graduate level, is required, and service to the profession and society is a merit. 

The applicant should demonstrate resourcefulness, flexibility, and very good ability to work together in different configurations. Excellence in English (orally and written) is a requirement. Personal qualities relevant for the position are of great importance.
