Research Associate in Signal Processing

Heriot-Watt University - School of Engineering and Physical Sciences

The position (Research Associate in Signal Processing - Distributed signal processing for acoustics sensor networks) targets cutting-edge research on the development and test of fast, parallelised and distributed algorithms for environmental monitoring in sensor networks under strong communications constraints. This will include the development of compressive sampling and data-aggregation schemes and the use of machine learning solutions to minimize resources utilisation and adapt the monitoring framework to different settings and changing environmental conditions. The algorithms developed must be integrated as part of a system-wide network management tool and be able to run on very low power and computational resources hardware.

We are looking for a creative and highly motivated researcher willing to work as part of a team.  The Research Associates and Investigators will closely collaborate: there will be regular meetings throughout the project, as well as larger project management meetings that the Research Associates will be expected to attend.

General tasks will involve scientific research; analysis and interpretation of data; daily oversight of the activities of postgraduate and undergraduate project students in the laboratory; communication with other investigators involved in this collaborative project; preparation of scientific papers; presentation of research at conferences.

Candidates will have will have a PhD in electrical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or a related area. Strong competence in signal processing is required, with experience in machine learning, optimization or Bayesian inference algorithms as well as sensor networks.

The post is available for 24 months.
