Postdoctoral Research Associate

The University of Edinburgh - College of Science and Engineering

A postdoctoral researcher is requested to join a collaborative project funded by the Wellcome Trust focused on antigenic variation in African trypanosomes of livestock.

The successful applicant will be based in Edinburgh (School of Biological Sciences and Roslin Institute) but will have interactions and research exchange with researchers in Glasgow, Liverpool, Lisbon (Portugal), Heidelberg (Germany) and Baltimore (USA). Working as part of this collaborative team of experimentalists, bioinformaticians and mathematical modellers, you will use deep sequencing approaches to analysed expressed antigen diversity in trypanosome parasites and the influence of parasite development and compartmentation on this.

You will work with natural and experimental hosts in vivo, generate parasite transgenic lines and analyse the impact of genetic perturbation of key parasite or host processes on the infection dynamics in vivo. You will have strong expertise in molecular cell biology and preferably experience with deep sequencing methods, qRT-PCR, flow cytometry, western blotting and immunology. Experience, and a strong interest, in parasite research will be an advantage. You should have, or will shortly obtain a PhD in a relevant subject.

You will work as part of a team and so will require good communication skills and the ability to co-ordinate experiments between members of the collaboration. The post is funded for 48 months and will be cosupervised in Edinburgh by Professor Keith Matthews (School of Biological Sciences) and Dr Liam Morrison (Roslin Institute), but will involve close experimental collaboration with a post doctoral researcher based in the laboratory of Dr Richard McCulloch (Wellcome Trust Centre for Molecular Parasitology, Glasgow).

Salary range: £32,548 - £38,833

Closing Date: 10 November 2017 at 5pm GMT
