Professor in Artistic and Experimental Fundamentals of Design

Hochschule Anhalt – Department of Design

Welcome to Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, one of the leading research universities in in Saxony-Anhalt. Located in the heart of Central Germany and as one of Germany’s ‘Innovative Universities’, Anhalt University combines international-level research and teaching with excellent study and living conditions.

With more than 70 degree programs, we provide students with the freedom to develop their own personalities. Most importantly, we prepare about 8,000 German and international students for a successful career start.

In Dessau, the city of Bauhaus, we respond to the complexity of a changing world with progressive design approaches.  Today – as in the Bauhaus heyday – the city is a place where the future is explored on many levels.

Our "Dessau model" of integrated design is in step with the tradition of the avant-garde. The design disciplines work together as a network to process fundamental questions and develop holistic interventions. 100 minutes away from Berlin, we work in one of the most exciting international future labs.

Major challenges can only be tackled together. Therefore, we are looking for you.

We invite applications for a professorship in

“Artistic and Experimental Fundamentals of Design”
(salary group W2)

to be filled at the earliest possible date.

We are looking for an outstanding individual with a background in a creative or artistic discipline (degree: MA or Diplom) to steer and develop the above field.

You will teach the fundamentals of design (colour, area, light, object, space, proportion, rhythm, contrast, composition, etc.) to students in our BA and MA integrated-design degree programmes. In these programmes, we combine communication design, product design and time-based media.

By experimenting in different design dimensions and emphatically engaging the students, you introduce them to artistic and design paths and support them in developing a reflective attitude. You lay the foundation for sensitised observation and the acquisition of a design vocabulary. In teaching fundamentals and in project studies, you introduce students to various artistic positions and guide their critical thinking.

We also expect an enthusiasm for art and design research. Knowledge of, and experience with, traditional and contemporary materials and technologies, as well as an active participation in current art and design discourses, round out your profile. Your research activities should unpack experimental design research questions with a focus on development, evaluation and publication. A strong commitment to securing and completing publicly funded research projects is expected. We also welcome the acquisition and implementation of contract research and cooperation projects with the private sector.

The teaching load is 16 class contact hours per week in the German-taught Bachelor and Master degree programmes as well as in the international, English-taught Master degree programmes. You are expected to have at least five years of professional experience, three of which should be outside the higher education sector, and be able to teach in German as well in English. The post also entails participation in collaborative academic management processes (Hochschulselbstverwaltung). In addition, theses as well as perspective doctoral theses are to be supervised.

The Department of Design currently invites applications for a number of professorships and offers exceptional individual creativity and design freedom in terms of structural content.

The requirements for employment are governed by Article 35 of the Hochschulgesetz Land Sachsen-Anhalt (HSG LSA). According to Article 17 of the Constitution of Anhalt University (Grundordnung der Hochschule Anhalt), in conjunction with Article 38 HSG LSA, the initial appointment as a professor is generally on a probationary basis. The salary is paid in line with the legal and budgetary conditions.

Anhalt University wishes to increase the proportion of women amongst its academic personnel and thus expressively encourages qualified women to apply for the post. The requirements of SGB IX apply to severely handicapped candidates with equal suitability, qualifications and professional performance.

Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, breakdown of the scientific career including teaching and practical work, list of publications, certified certificates/dcouments – school-leaving certificate, university degree, doctorate, post-doctoral qualification/Habilitation, if applicable) are requested to be sent within one month after the publication of this advertisement to:
