Research Fellow

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to join the Nutrition and Metabolism Group, Human Development and Health Academic Unit, Faculty of Medicine. This post forms part of the Immunometabolism Group led by Dr Jaswinder K. Sethi and is funded by The Wellcome Trust. Our research interests focus on elucidating the molecular mechanisms by which immune-derived signals impact on energy metabolism. To do this we use a range of unique genetically modified in vitro and in vivo models of obesity and inflammation as applied to metabolic health and disease.

The post-holder's responsibilities will include helping in the day-to-day running of the lab, to perform routine assays, and to support lab members in their research experiments. Hence, we are seeking a individual with experience and interests in a broad range of methodologies including animal handling/breeding/cryopreservation/rederivation, cell culture, molecular techniques, transcriptomics, immunohistochemistry, and confocal microscopy. Knowledge in the areas of in stock control and general lab management would be valuable. Where necessary, training can be provided.

The successful candidate will have a BSc (Hons) or equivalent in the fields of Physiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, or related discipline. Applications are welcome from candidates who are looking to return to active research after a career break, or are working towards and nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.

This post is 0.5FTE, is funded by Wellcome Trust, and is for 18 months in the first instance. It is based at the Institute of Developmental Sciences.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who hold a PhD or equivalent qualification, or in the case of candidates who already have at least one relevant research paper accepted for publication, who have submitted a PhD thesis for the examination of the degree of PhD and are preparing for an examination by viva. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon award of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
