Academic Clinical Fellowship (1-year)

University of Aberdeen - Medical Research Council Centre for Medical Mycology

Start Date: 3 September 2018

The MRC Centre for Medical Mycology at the University of Aberdeen is seeking applications from outstanding medical and dental graduates with an interest and aptitude for developing a career in clinical academia.  Our bespoke 1-year fully funded Pre-Doctoral Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) provides talented clinicians with an exciting and unrivalled opportunity for protected time to develop academic skills and gain research experience in a world-class centre of excellence for studying fungal infectious diseases.

The ACF is underpinned by structured taught courses to provide an extensive knowledge and skill-base in medical mycology and fungal immunology, followed by a 7-month cross-disciplinary research project. Fellows will be strongly encouraged and supported to develop their pilot data into an application for a highly prestigious and competitive externally funded Clinical Research Training Fellowship.

We aim to appoint three Academic Clinical Fellows over the next 3 years with successful completion recognised by the award of a MRes degree in Medical Mycology & Fungal Immunology. Fellows will be assigned a mentor to provide independent support and advice during the ACF.  Additional research and transferable skills training will be provided.

Funding and Eligibility

Candidates must have a minimum of 12 months postgraduate clinical experience (completion of UK Medical or Dental Foundation Year 1 competencies) and be fully registered with the GMC or GDC at the time of appointment. We anticipate some candidates will have commenced specialty training (with a National Training Number) and are willing to consider applicants up to 1 year from award of their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). Previous laboratory experience is not essential but applicants must demonstrate an interest in pursuing an academic career.

The post attracts a clinical salary based on a standard 40-hour week (£33,131 to £39,358) and a generous research budget including competitive funding for travel to conferences and workshops.

This post is not on the current "shortage occupation" list and does not meet the minimum qualification requirements as issued by the Border and Immigration Agency therefore it will not qualify for a work permit.  Unfortunately we are unable to consider applications from candidates for this post who require a work permit to work in the UK.
