Animal Technician

University College London - Institute of Prion Diseases

We are one of the world’s leading research centres for the study of prions and their wider relevance to neurodegenerative disease with a growing research activity in Alzheimer’s disease (www.prion.ucl.ac.uk). The Institute is highly multidisciplinary with close integration of structural and molecular biology, genetics, cellular and animal models, small molecule and immuno-therapeutics and clinical research. MRC and UCL are jointly investing £30 million in provision of a dedicated new building in central London for the Institute in late 2017 supporting the vision to expand research in protein miscoding and aggregation in neurodegenerative disease.

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic person to join our Biological Services Facility to provide technical support for the research facility as required by the scientific staff of the unit. This is due to the career progression of some of our staff.

Main duties will include: animal husbandry, breeding rodents, supporting experiments and research staff, conducting physical/physiological assessments of animals and participating with the in-house training scheme when appropriate.

This post is open-ended and funded till 31st March 2021 in the first instance.

You should ideally possess an IAT Certificate or have an equivalent animal care qualification. Four GCSEs (C or above) including English, Maths and a science is essential. Experience of animal technology and a Home Office personal license would be advantageous.
