Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Laboratory Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence with High Power Lasers.

The post is available for a fixed-term until 31 December 2019.

The generation and amplification of magnetic fields in the Universe is one of remaining outstanding question in modern astronomy. This project aims at providing a new route towards the understanding of magnetogenesis via laboratory experiments using laboratory lasers (from University scale to the largest ones in the world, notably NIF, where an experiment has been approved). The successful candidate will lead the planning and execution of experiments as well as the analysis of the data with both numerical and analytical methods. They may also be involved in studying the role of turbulence (and dynamo) in producing the present day values of magnetic fields in clusters of galaxies. The postholder will have the opportunity to teach.

Applicants should possess (or be close to obtaining) a doctorate in physics or a related field and have a strong background in plasma and laser physics. Previous experience in the field of astronomy and astrophysics will be an advantage. Candidates are expected to demonstrate excellent skills in plasma diagnostics (both optical and x-rays) as well as data analysis capabilities.
