The project will be part of a collaboration between the School of Engineering and the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. You will have access to one of the most comprehensive Additive Manufacturing (3D-Printing) laboratory facilities in the world and a state-of-the-art Nanotechnology and NanoScience Centre. Project description: 

To develop novel polymer nanocomposite powder particles for processing by powder bed fusion techniques (e.g. laser sintering). This project will use novel technologies developed in the School of Chemistry to produce powders with unique functionality. A comprehensive investigation on the effects of these additives on processing and mechanical/material properties will be undertaken. Initial work will focus on Fe-CNFs for use in healthcare applications.

The student will be encouraged to actively participate in the Centre for Healthcare Technologies (, a unique collaboration between the University of Nottingham and the NUH NHS Trust. They will also have the opportunity to participate in the Medilink Special Interest Group for AM&3DP (, providing useful networking with the healthcare industry and medical practitioners.

The project will be supervised by Dr Ruth Goodridge, Dr Maria Gimenez-Lopez and Prof Ian Ashcroft.

Requirements of the studentships:

  • Due to funding restrictions, the position is only available for UK or EU candidates
  • Candidates must possess or expect to obtain, a 2:1 degree in Engineering, Physics or Science related discipline. Students with a Materials or Chemistry background are particularly encouraged to apply.
