PhD studentship in the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape

Newcastle University - School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape

Name of supervisor(s): Professor Adam Sharr

The studentship, is to conduct practice-based research in architecture. It is an opportunity to work on a PhD by Creative Practice with the school’s Design Office research consultancy; with the potential to collaborate on – and construct a thesis around – a series of live and theoretical architectural projects in the Office.

This studentship is School-funded and is offered for a three year period. The studentship attracts a bursary of £15,000 per year to cover fees and living costs for three years, and some research expenses.  International students are welcome to apply for this award, however, a successful non-EU applicant will therefore have a lower stipend for living costs because of their substantially higher fees.

The studentship carries an expectation that the student will work with the Design Office as part of their thesis studies.

It is possible that the candidate might also be able to use their work in conjunction with the thesis and the Design Office towards a qualification at RIBA part 3.

The studentship is open to UK, EU and international applicants who propose to study for their PhD on a full-time basis.

£15,000 per year for 3 years. The scholarship is payable towards 100% of the tuition fee rate, with the remainder awarded as living expenses.

Applicants must have:

  • a 2.1 degree in Architecture
  • either a BArch or MArch (RIBA part 2 or equivalent)
  • a background in architecture and the motivation to develop and complete a suitable PhD thesis
  • IELTS 6.5 overall (with 6.5 in writing and a minimum of 5.5 in all other sub-skills) if English is not your first language.
