We have a fantastic opportunity to join our education team at HMYOI Deerbolt as a Sessional Vocational Trainer - Plumbing on a sessional (ADHOC) basis.

HMYOI Deerbolt is located in Barnard Castle and is a Young Offenders Institution that holds up to 500 young adult male prisoners (18-21). Novus at HMYOI Deerbolt work in partnership with a range of national and local stakeholders to ensure a seamless transition from custody to release.

Novus offers a wide-ranging curriculum of formal learning, which provides opportunities for nationally recognised accreditation and progression valued by employers. Delivery at Deerbolt is sector specific, offering opportunities in construction, horticulture, facilities management, IT, and social enterprise. There is functional skills and employability provision support delivery in all these sectors. However, a military academy and a hospitality and catering sector is currently in development. Overall, Novus staff provide a quality service which results in high levels of achievements for most learners on most courses.

Personal and social development has been incorporated into all learning areas with evidence recorded on Individual Learning Plans. The department has adopted a social model of inclusive learning to enable all learners to access, participate, progress and achieve; this is built into the whole learner journey from induction, where needs, abilities and support requirements are discussed and documented with individuals. 

Learning is delivered throughout the year over nine sessions per week. Morning sessions take place Monday to Friday from 9am – 12pm. Afternoon sessions take place Monday to Thursday from 1.45pm – 4.30pm. Staff are required to be present in the department from 8am to attend a daily briefing.

The purpose of this role is to deliver high quality, learner focused vocational training to meet contractual requirements and Awarding Body standards. To do this successfully you’ll need to:

  • Have experience in your vocational specialism.
  • Hold at least a Level 2 qualification in Literacy and Numeracy.
  • Hold a Level 3 subject specific qualification.
  • Have a commitment to gain an assessor award required by relevant Awarding Bodies.

Successful candidates will be required to undertaking vetting for these roles.
