The Center for Big Data Analysis at Uni Research Computing is seeking an experienced programmer on a full-time, permanent basis with background in natural sciences, mathematics, computer science. 

Uni Research Computing is a department of Uni Research, the non-profit research company affiliated with the University of Bergen, Norway. The department carries out research and development in big data and big data related applications in science and technology. 

Uni Research Computing is hosting the Center for Big Data Analysis with special focus on the integration of big data and science. The successful candidate will work and contribute to the currently nine staff strong team of the center, consisting of data- and applications scientists, programmers and IT-experts. The focus of the new position will be on the technical development of the Hadoop/Spark-based big data IT-infrastructure at the center, and the design, implementation and optimization of big data solutions.

Candidate requirements:

  • Enthusiasm, independence, creativity with good communication skills.
  • Excellent programming skills in Python, Java and/or Scala.
  • Good knowledge of algorithms and data structures.
  • Good knowledge in distributed computing and experience with design of distributed applications.
  • Willingness to learn new frameworks and paradigms as required.
  • Familiarity with Linux system is mandatory, familiarity with Hadoop or Spark will be considered as a great plus.
  • Master’s degree, or equivalent level of higher education in natural sciences, mathematics or computer sciences. A PhD degree will be considered as a great plus. Extensive relevant experience may be considered in place of higher education.
  • Attaching samples of own programming work, e.g. links to own projects on Github, will be considered a plus.
  • Good knowledge of English, written and oral.
