Research Assistant in Electron Microscopy

University of Oxford - Sir William Dunn School of Pathology

South Parks Road, Oxford

We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to join the Electron Microscope Facility based in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology at the University of Oxford.

The successful candidate will undertake work on electron microscopy (EM) service projects, which will involve preparing a wide range of biological samples, using a variety of EM specimen preparation techniques (eg: chemical fixation, cryo-fixation and freeze substitution), and imaging them using transmission electron microscopy or scanning electron microscopy. The postholder will also contribute to training and supporting users in EM specimen preparation techniques (including ultramicrotomy) and on the electron microscopes, as well as assisting in the day-to-day running of the Facility, which will include preparation of chemical solutions, ordering consumables, management of hazardous waste disposal and general lab and equipment maintenance. There will also be scope to develop the capabilities of the Facility in advanced EM techniques, which will involve both independent and collaborative work with researchers.

You will have a degree level qualification in science, ideally in the biological sciences. Some previous experience with EM, including biological specimen preparation techniques, is essential. You should have strong communication and organisational skills, the ability to work to deadlines and to work as part of a team, as well as independently. A willingness to learn and demonstrable interest in biological EM is essential.

The post is available as a fixed-term contract for 3 years, with the possibility of further extension. If you are interested in this role, and have the skills and experience we are looking for, please apply online. You will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement as part of your online application.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 midday on 15 January 2018. Interviews will be held as soon as possible thereafter.
