Open University - Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, School of Physical Sciences

Based in Milton Keynes

Temporary contract for 24 months

We are seeking a Project Officer to work within the Centre for Electronic Imaging (CEI) on the sensor for JANUS, a high resolution camera on board a major forthcoming space mission (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) to study Jupiter and its moons, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto.

You will work at the CEI on the sensor for JANUS and will be engaged in all aspects of the electro-optical and radiation characterisation of the new CMOS sensor. You will become a key expert in its operation and performance. This will involve detailed electro-optical characterisation of non-irradiated sensors, performing high energy sensor irradiation similar to the expected environment around Jupiter and evaluating the performance of devices subjected to radiation damage effects. You will also undertake modelling of radiation effects.

You will have a BSc in Physics, Electronic Engineering or a closely related subject with good understanding and experience in the characterisation of image sensors, proficiency with data acquisition and data processing software and experience with vacuum and cryogenic equipment. You will have good problem solving skills with a logical and rigorous approach to work, well developed self-management skills with the ability to prioritise work appropriately and to deal with several competing demands. Strong verbal and written communication skills in a team environment are also essential.
