Postdoctoral Research Assistant

Queen Mary University of London - School of Electronic Engineering & Computer Science

Applications are invited for a 24 months Postdoctoral Research Assistant position on EPSRC SYMETA project: SYnthesizing 3D METAmaterials for RF, microwave and THz applications.

We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Assistant to participate in the EPSRC funded project “SYnthesizing 3D METAmaterials for RF, Microwave and THz Applications (SYMETA)”. The research will be undertaken under the supervision of Professor Yang Hao. The project’s grand vision is to deliver a palette of novel, multi-functional 3D metamaterials using emerging additive manufacturing (AM), with the potential to support a single 'design-build' process. The goal is to compile a palette of meta-atoms and then to organise these inclusions systematically to give the desired bulk properties, opens up a plethora of new structures.

In the general context described above, the postdoctoral researcher will more particularly focus his/her research during 2 years on the following topics:

  • Design, simulation and measurement of 3D metamaterial structures. Analysing the behaviour of these structures and integrated them to real component designs.
  • Design and simulation of an X-band metamaterial phased array imager as a demonstrator. Implementation of microwave array imaging algorithms in the demonstrator.
  • Investigation of advanced numerical techniques like compressive sensing to enhance the imaging performance.

The ideal candidate should possess an excellent knowledge of antenna analysis, design and optimization processes. A strong competence in signal processing and microwave array imaging is also required. In addition, applicants will have at least good skills in using EM simulation tools like CST, HFSS, Comsol, and will have programming ability in one or more of: C/C++, Python, Matlab. The candidate will have a PhD or equivalent degree in Electric and/or Electronic Engineering; good communication skills are also welcome.

The post is full time, fixed term appointment for 24 months, with an expected start date of 8 Jan 2018 or as soon as possible. Starting salary will be £32,956 - £38,709, inclusive of London Allowance. Benefits include 30 days’ annual leave, defined benefit pension scheme and interest-free season ticket loan.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the UK in accordance with the Immigration, Asylum and Nationality Act 2006. Where required this may include entry clearance or continued leave to remain under the Points Based Immigration Scheme.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Professor Yang Hao ( or by phone: +442078825341.

Candidates are politely requested to upload documents totalling no more than 10 pages.

Please note large documents e.g. PhD thesis/Research papers are not forwarded to the interview panel.

The closing date for applications is 15 December 2017. Interviews are expected to be held shortly thereafter.
