Research Associate in Biophysics/Super-Resolution Microscopy

Role Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented biophysics postdoc to join Prof Mark Leake’s laboratory in the Departments of Physics and Biology, University of York. Our laboratory is interested in developing and applying novel methods of single-molecule biophysics and super-resolution microscopy tools to address fundamental biological questions (see http://single-molecule-biophysics.org/), with one of our key questions concerning how proteins interact with DNA. We have used these cutting-edge tools to follow functional enzyme kinetics in living cells one molecule at a time, resolving basic questions concerning DNA replication (see Elfie DOI: Science 2012 DOI; Science 2010). Your role is a postdoctoral research associate position funded by the BBSRC for the project ‘Tackling tricky twists – how does DNA gyrase function inside living cells?’ in collaboration with Prof Tony Maxwell (see https://www.jic.ac.uk/staff/tony-maxwell/) and Prof Peter McGlynn (see https://www.york.ac.uk/biology/research/molecular-microbiology/peter-mcglynn/). This project seeks to integrate the extensive known biochemical, structural and genetic information on gyrase with very high resolution bioimaging approaches that enable single molecules of DNA gyrase to be tracked inside living cells. There may also be opportunities for you to extend uses of these bioimaging tools in what is a fantastic research playground for a modern biophysics postdoc to explore and grow.

You will conduct research under the supervision of senior colleagues and contribute to the production of research and assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative research projects. You will develop and initiate collaborative working internally and externally, providing guidance to other staff and students. You will write up research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and public engagement and outreach activities.

You will already possess a relevant PhD, or be close to obtaining one, with a significant biophysics or related component. You will have knowledge of optical physics and experience in experimental biophysics. You will possess skills in construction/modification/application of complex biophysical apparatus, and ideally have experience of advanced light microscopy, single-molecule biophysics and scientific computation combined with a strong interest in the application of advanced biophysical tools to biological problems.  You will need to be able to work independently as well as part of the programme team working on related projects. Excellent communication skills are essential and you should be keen to develop project/team leadership skills, and to establish bridges between the physical and life sciences.
