Mechanical Workshop Technician

The Department of Chemistry is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Workshop Technician. Reporting to the Mechanical Engineering Manager or their deputy, you will be part of a team responsible for providing mechanical engineering technical skills with regards to the manufacture, construction and maintenance of experimental equipment used in teaching and research laboratories.

You will build from design, modify, maintain and repair items of scientific research equipment and instrumentation as required by academic researchers within the Department of Chemistry. You will manufacture, prepare drawings from sketches, construct, modify and repair high quality, fine tolerance scientific apparatus or components as required by research staff.

You will have served a recognised apprenticeship in an appropriate subject and be qualified to City and Guilds, BTEC, or equivalent and have experience of working on a full range of manual machines, experience of working from engineering drawings  and be familiar with health and safety requirements in a workshop environment.

You will have some experience of operating and programming CNC machines

You will be able to communicate effectively with people at all levels and work collaboratively as part of a team. You 0will have a willingness to learn new skills as required. You will have good levels of computer literacy including Microsoft Outlook and some Computer-Aided design (CAD)
